Practical Information
“Human nature dictates that it is virtually impossible to accept advice from someone unless you feel that that person understands you.”
― John M. Gottman
Who are our clients?
Center for Relationship Learning supports all couples irrespective of race, religion, class, culture, sexual orientation, and ethnicity.
Is counseling confidential?
Counseling is strictly confidential. Without your permission, nothing will be disclosed to third parties. This also applies when a third party funds the sessions. Confidentiality can only be breached in extremely exceptional circumstances where the health and safety of you or others are at serious risk.
How long will it take?
Before you as a couple begin treatment with your Relationships International therapist you will participate in an assessment process. The assessment process includes:
- a 90-minute interview with you as a couple tracing the trajectory of your relationship, observing how you interact, especially during difficult discussions;
- an online questionnaire;
- a 45 or 60 minute individual session during which you will be able to talk about your own perspective and goals for your relationship; and
- a 90-minute feedback session, during which the therapist will review your assessment materials and provide detailed feedback on the strengths and challenges of your relationship. At the end of the feedback session you will receive recommendations on what changes might be helpful in creating a flourishing relationship.
The total number of sessions after the assessment depends very much on your personal circumstances. The therapeutic process is collaborative throughout. Change doesn’t happen quickly for most of us. The length of treatment depends on a number of variables: the severity of the problem, and the motivation of the clients. Many of our clients report that they experience some kind of change already in the first session after the assessment.
